What to Do When Your Outdoor AC Unit Won’t Turn On

The last thing any homeowner wants is a problematic air conditioning system at the peak of the summer season. If you’ve noticed that the outdoor AC unit (also called the condenser unit) won’t turn on even though the indoor unit is already running, you’ll need to immediately determine what’s causing this to avoid any downtimes of your home’s cooling. A premier air conditioning maintenance company in the area, Superior Air, shares more of what you need to know here.

  • Check if the condenser unit is switched on. The fact is that most outdoor AC units have an ON/OFF switch in a small box nearby. Perhaps something has moved it to the OFF position, in which case you just need to turn it back ON.
  • Make sure the thermostat is set correctly. Maybe someone in the household has tinkered with the thermostat. Many people have a different idea of what constitutes a comfortable temperature, after all. What you should do is check your thermostat to confirm that it’s set to COOL, with the temperature setting at least 5 degrees below that of the current indoor temperature. You should feel or hear your outdoor AC unit running after a minute or two.
  • Look for a tripped circuit breaker. This may be the reason your condenser unit isn’t switching on. Head down to the circuit box and check if the breaker has tripped. Should this be the case, flip the switch all the way OFF, then turn it back ON. If this doesn’t work and the breaker keeps tripping, it may be time to call a dependable air conditioning repair company in your area, Superior Air.

Troubleshooting your AC can only go so far. If the problem seems to have a more serious cause, Superior Air is more than ready to take it on.
