Tips on Improving Your Heating System’s Efficiency

An efficient heating system has a longer expected lifespan, can be counted on to provide heating when you need it and can even help you save on your annual energy costs. In addition to calling for timely heating and air conditioning repair when required, the following are our tips on how to improve your heating system’s efficiency.

TIP: Regularly Clean or Replace the Filters

Regardless of the kind of heating system that you have, it will have filters that will require regular cleaning or replacement if they’re disposable. Filters tend to get clogged with dust and dirt, which could reduce the amount of air that circulates within your home. Ideally, they should be replaced every three months, but it can be as often as every month during extreme heating or cooling seasons. Filters are typically user-replaceable, especially on heat pumps. If in doubt, consult your HVAC system technician.

TIP: Clear the Vents

Your heating and air conditioning maintenance and inspection routine should include clearing anything that might obstruct the vents and registers. The idea is to allow proper airflow, which lets warm air to get into the center of the room faster. Hot air can also be damaging to furniture, so keeping items away from heat vents can help prevent potential damage.

TIP: Use Your Fans

If your room has a standalone or ceiling fan, use it to enhance circulation in the room. Keeping the air continuously moving allows better circulation that helps keep warm air from lingering close to the ceiling. It also helps spread warm air evenly, which makes your heating system more efficient.

TIP: Invest in Energy-Efficient Fenestrations

Fenestrations are entry doors, windows and skylights. Energy-efficient fenestrations complement the exterior wall and attic insulation, which help prevent heat loss during cold days and heat gain during hot days. Energy-efficient replacement windows, entry doors or skylights bear an ENERGY STAR® sticker along with an energy performance label. Inspect the label, and look for the U-Factor, which indicates ratings between 0.20 to 1.20. The lower the rating is, the better it helps your heating system.

TIP: Don’t Put Off Scheduled Maintenance

The technician who installed your heating system will likely have recommended scheduled maintenance dates, which you should not put off even if your heating system seems to be working fine. Scheduled maintenance lets the HVAC technician spot both potential and apparent problems, and fix them before they become bigger ones that could result in costly repairs.
