Sure, people need space, but so does your outdoor air conditioning unit. Without proper clearance around it, your AC may not work as efficiently as you’d like. This is something no homeowner wants to hear, especially if they’ve just invested in a new AC this season. Here Superior Air, a premier air conditioning maintenance company in the area, shares how much clearance your installer should leave around the outdoor unit.
The Number May Vary
Proper clearance enables you to avoid premature AC repairs and extend your system’s life and performance. A good rule of thumb is that your installer should clear a space of at least one foot–or 12 inches–on all sides of the outdoor unit. Some HVAC manufacturers have their own specific guidelines regarding proper clearance. Depending on the brand, it may be recommended for the outdoor AC unit to have a clearance of between 12 and 24 inches. There are a few other things you’ll need to take into account as well, including:
Vertical Clearance
Your outdoor AC unit should have at least 60 inches of vertical clearance to ensure it has enough space for proper air circulation. Otherwise, a cramped space will place unnecessary strain on the unit, causing it to operate less satisfactorily. When this happens, you might need to invest in prompt air conditioning repair to address the issue.
Greenery
Your AC installer can get away with only six inches of clearance if the shrubbery around the unit isn’t particularly dense. Anything lower and air won’t be able to pass through the foliage. To prevent greenery from encroaching on the AC’s space (and to maintain that six-inch clearance), you should check the shrubs every few weeks and cut them back as needed.
Exterior Wall
Your outdoor AC unit requires at least 16 to 18 inches of clearance when installed next to an exterior wall. This allows for uninterrupted airflow, which will help cool down the coils at the base of the unit and keep energy costs to a minimum.
