Pests can find their way into HVAC systems and cause damage sight unseen. In today’s post, local air conditioning installation contractor Superior Air shares a look at how you can protect your HVAC system from pests.
What Happens When Pests Get Into HVAC Systems?
Pests such as insects and raccoons can gain access to the HVAC system through vent openings, gaps in the ductwork or piping from the air conditioner’s outdoor unit. The following are some of the common problems caused by pests:
Damage — Pests sometimes form nests or colonies in areas where they’re not easily seen, so you might not notice them before they start spreading and causing damage in other parts of the house. Pests such as termites can cause structural damage that often requires extensive repair work.
Indoor air quality issues — Droppings and dead pests left in the air ducts can result in strong odors that may take time to locate and get rid of. Some pesticides, as well as products that eliminate or mask odors, may also affect indoor air quality.
Health risks — These same pesticides may irritate the eyes, nose and throat. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to pesticides may also cause damage to the kidneys, liver and central nervous system.
How to Pest-Proof HVAC Components
Along with keeping up with scheduled air conditioning maintenance, the following can help pest-proof your HVAC system:
Seal the air ducts — Your HVAC technician has probably already recommended having your air ducts resealed every five years or so. This is because particles can get past the air filter and settle in the air ducts. The constant airflow can also wear down the seals in the joints and seams, which can become entry points for pests. Sealing the air ducts will require specialized equipment, and therefore should be left to professionals.
Install flue and vent covers — If your home is equipped with a traditional heating system like a furnace or fireplace, installing flue and vent covers can help block access to pests.
Regularly clean your outdoor AC unit — Keeping your outdoor AC unit clean will help keep it running efficiently. It will also reduce the risk of rodents and other small animals nesting in it when it’s not in use.
