Determining if You Have a Faulty AC Sensor & How to Fix It if You Do

Air conditioners are designed to provide homes and other properties with suitable indoor air quality. They have thermostat sensors that are responsible for measuring the temperature of air coming into the evaporator coil. These are vital features when it comes to reading and activating the desired temperature in a room. In this post, we’ve listed some of the signs that your AC has sensor problems:

Faulty thermostat. When the thermostat is faulty, the sensor will usually cycle intermittently in an on-and-off manner during the usual activation periods. If it’s too hot or too cold inside your house, the thermostat will start acting up by turning itself off before the desired temperature for the room is even met. In this case, you should immediately call for an air conditioning repair to avoid further damage and costly repairs.

Displaced sensor. Because the sensor functions by measuring the air temperature making its way into the coil, a displaced one will have a hard time doing this, and can make the unit work at irregular intervals. Anticipate that the unit will have difficulty providing dependable cooling for its occupants if this occurs.

What You Can Do

In most cases, you can easily fix your unit on your own. Here’s how:

  • Turn your air conditioner off as well as the power at the main electrical panel.
  • Access the evaporator coil inside. The sensor will be near the coil. If the sensor is bent, you can cautiously bend it back into place. then turn the breaker back on at the main panel and switch your system on.
  • However, if it’s bent away from the coil or if it seems like the sensor is the problem, contact air conditioning maintenance providers to have it checked.
  • If you’re still unsure about what to do, rest assured that there’s a team of professionals that can assist you.  Get in touch with a professional to inspect your system and provide you with a proper estimate.
