Decoding Air Purifier Terms: Your Guide to Clean Indoor Air

When it comes to breathing clean air indoors, an air purifier is a valuable ally. However, navigating the jargon used in product descriptions can sometimes feel like learning a new language. In this post, Superior Air breaks down common air purifier terms for you.

HEPA

Ever come across the term HEPA and wondered what it means? HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. A HEPA filter traps and removes at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns.

Activated Carbon

This form of processed carbon has small, low-volume pores, which increase the surface area for adsorption. In simpler terms, it’s fantastic for trapping gases, odors and volatile organic compounds in your air.

UVGI

UVG or ultraviolet germicidal irradiation is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C) light to kill or inactivate microorganisms. If you are concerned about bacteria and viruses, you should use an air purifier with UVGI technology.

CADR

Another term you may stumble upon is CADR or clean air delivery rate. It gives you an idea of the volume of filtered air delivered by an air purifier. The higher the CADR, the faster and more efficient the air purifier is.

PM2.5

Lastly, PM2.5 refers to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers. To give you an idea, it’s about 3% the diameter of a human hair. These particles are so small that they can only be detected with an electron microscope and are considered hazardous to human health.
