A Guide to Identifying Your Home’s HVAC System

Understanding your HVAC system can help you maintain it better and plan for its longevity. With so many types of HVACs on the market, it can be quite a challenge to identify which one is housed in your home. This guide covers everything you need to know about your current system, enabling you to make informed decisions about the appropriate heating and air conditioning maintenance, repair, or replacement.

Identifying Different Types of HVAC Systems

Understanding your HVAC system begins with knowing its type. Here’s a look at some of them:

  • Central Air Conditioning. A central air conditioning installation is perhaps the most common type you’ll encounter. It dispatches conditioned air throughout your house via ductwork. If you have vents in multiple rooms blowing cool air, you likely have a central air conditioning system.
  • Heat Pumps. Heat pumps, on the other hand, work by transferring heat from one place to another. During the summer, it moves heat from your home to the outside. In winter, it works in reverse. If you have a unit that provides both heating and cooling, you may have a heat pump.
  • Ductless Mini-Split. A ductless mini-split system, as the name suggests, doesn’t require ducts to circulate conditioned air. Instead, it has an outdoor compressor and an indoor handling unit. This system is perfect for cooling individual rooms in your home.
  • Furnaces. Lastly, a furnace heats air and uses ducts to distribute the hot air throughout your home. You rely on this heating system when temperatures continue to drop in the fall and winter months and you need indoor warmth.
