5 Possible Reasons Why Your AC Unit Isn’t Cooling Properly

The last thing you want on a hot summer day is for your air conditioner to blow not-so-cool air. Understanding why this happens is important so you can determine how to solve the issue and when to call in a local air conditioning repair technician. Read on as we discuss the five possible reasons why your AC unit isn’t cooling properly.

1. Bad or Broken Thermostat

If your AC system isn’t cooling your home properly, take a look at the thermostat. It might just be on the wrong setting or need the batteries replaced. If the issue persists even after checking these issues, there could be a problem with the electrical connections between the thermostat and the HVAC unit. If you are unsure, don’t go it alone; get in touch with a local technician to do the job safely.

2. Clogged Condenser Unit

A clogged condenser unit prevents your AC system from cooling properly. Debris and dirt will block even heat transfer. Check if there’s anything that’s keeping the outdoor unit from functioning well. Remove weeds and dirt from around the condenser unit to give it enough airflow.

3. Low Refrigerant

The refrigerant absorbs heat from the surrounding air during the cooling process. One of the reasons why your AC unit may not cool your home properly might be due to a lack of this substance as a result of a leak. Signs such as hissing or bubbling noises, as well as ice buildup on the outside unit, can help identify the problem. Stop this problem from happening by scheduling regular air conditioning maintenance checks.

4. Capacitor Failure

The capacitor might have an issue if the outside fan is running but not the compressor. If you hear clicking sounds coming out of the AC unit, it is an indication of a failing capacitor. When this happens, the motor attached to it will hum. Turn off your AC immediately or the motor could burn out and need to be replaced. Call your air conditioning maintenance specialist for a thorough inspection, which will involve removing the housing of the AC unit.

5. Broken Fan Motor

The fan motor experiences a lot of wear and tear, especially if your AC system is not regularly maintained. A sign that your fan motor is broken or failing is a buzzing noise. Since the problem may be with the capacitor powering the motor and not the motor itself, it’s important to have a professional HVAC technician diagnose this issue.
