3 Ways to Prevent Thermal Bridging

One of the primary goals of a home improvement project is to use energy more efficiently, and fortunately there are many ways to conserve energy and minimize electricity bills. For example, some homeowners might install picture windows to let natural light flood their home during the day, while in other areas special windows can be used to keep indoor heat in and outdoor heat out. Chimneys are now also being upgraded to obtain maximum efficiency.

Unfortunately, problems relating to energy efficiency still exist, one of which is thermal bridging. Thermal bridging is the movement of heat across an object that’s more conductive than the materials around it. As this leads to outdoor heat seeping through the walls of the home due to a lack of adequate insulation, it can put a strain on your HVAC system, requiring more frequent air conditioning repair.

Keeping thermal bridging at bay is important, and here are some ways to go about it:

More Insulation

As we continue to experience a hotter climate, more and more homeowners are now opting for air conditioning installation. However, thermal bridging makes it harder to cool down the house as the heat intensifies outside.

The solution is to install more insulation in your walls. Rigid insulation panels are usually installed on exterior cladding to stop thermal bridging.

Eliminate Moisture

Another way to eliminate this problem is to get rid of moisture buildups. Thermal barriers allow moisture to form inside the walls, which usually happens during humid weather. However, insulated sheathing can be used to cover the whole exterior. With this material in place, condensation will be totally gone.

Look at the Roof

Walls are not the only pathway for heat; the roof is also notorious when it comes to energy loss in houses.

Pro Tip: Install insulation boards beneath your roofing system. This will radically help eliminate thermal bridging throughout  the entire house.
