An HVAC system with an efficient air filtration component is important, as it draws in air that contains dust and other types of airborne particulates. In this blog, air conditioning repair contractor Superior Air discusses the kind of damage dust can cause in HVAC systems.
Air conditioners generate cool air by passing refrigerant through various stages of compression and evaporation. At one point, refrigerant becomes a super-cooled substance, which is passed through metal coils. Cool air results from filtered air being blown over these coils. If unfiltered air is blown over the same coils, dust will collect on them. This results in ice formation that can spread to other parts of the HVAC system. If you notice ice forming on your air conditioner, don’t try to scrape or melt it off. Instead, call an HVAC technician for repairs.
You can avoid ice formation by inspecting your air filters regularly. Air filters are usually due for cleaning or replacement every three months; however, during periods of heavy use it may be required as often as once a month. If circumstances prevent you from performing home maintenance tasks, consider signing up for a heating and air conditioning maintenance agreement with your HVAC contractor.
Accumulated dust stifles airflow and forces your HVAC system to compensate by increasing its output. This in turn results in greater energy consumption, which leads to higher energy bills. Reduced efficiency may also affect indoor air quality, as the HVAC system is no longer able to catch contaminants such as unpleasant smells, smoke particles and spores that can trigger allergies, as well as cause mold and mildew growth.
Yet another reason to keep your air conditioner dust-free is to make sure it’s not overworked. Increased air conditioner output means your unit runs at full throttle most of the time. This puts constant stress on the system, which can lead to frequent breakdowns, something that you definitely don’t want to deal with in the middle of the summer season. In addition, some manufacturers consider the presence of dust in the HVAC system a sign of neglect, which could render your warranty coverage invalid.
