Should Indoor and Outdoor AC Units Be Replaced at the Same Time?

With a split air conditioning installation, the system will often have an indoor and an outdoor unit. Both these units are essential in HVAC installation, and one cannot perform without the other. However, when a problem arises in either, is it really necessary to have both units replaced, or can you simply swap out the damaged unit and leave the other one alone?

This question is something many homeowners ask our professionals at Superior Air during repair visits. The answer, of course, must be determined on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the situation, it may be necessary to replace both the indoor and outdoor unit at the same time, and here are the reasons why.

Parts of the Same Whole

When it comes to air conditioning maintenance and performance, there’s no question that matched units always work better together. Split systems are designed to work in tandem to provide your home with optimal cooling at high efficiency levels. Replacing one without the other breaks this connection and can put extra stress on the system.

Energy Efficiency

ENERGY STAR® ratings for HVAC units are often determined using matched systems. This means the energy efficiency of two different systems working together will be harder to measure. There are cases when this can actually improve the performance of your system, but these are rare. It’s more likely that you’re sacrificing energy efficiency by using mismatched units.

Saving Money

Poor energy efficiency leads to higher energy bills and frequent calls for air conditioning repair services. While it will certainly seem like you’re saving money by only replacing one unit and leaving the other, you’re actually spending more in the long run through other means.
